But your mind is not. Questions you set aside during the day come back in the dark. What if this never happens? What is wrong? How much longer, Lord?

If you are waiting and praying for a baby, you may know those long nights well. Worry has a way of growing louder when everything else goes still. Please know that you are not weak for feeling it, and you are not alone in it. The Lord is with you in the quiet hours, and He offers a peace that worry cannot take away.

He knows every thought you carry

The psalmist understood a restless mind. He wrote, “In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul” (Psalm 94:19).

He did not say the thoughts disappeared. But in the middle of all those thoughts, God’s comforts met him. The Lord does not wait for your mind to be calm before He draws near. He comes right into the swirl of questions and offers His comfort there.

You are allowed to hand Him the weight

First Peter 5:7 is a short verse with a tender invitation: “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

All your care. That includes the fear about the future, the grief over what has not come, the doctor’s words that keep replaying, and the ache you feel when you see other families. You do not have to sort your worries into the ones that are acceptable to bring to God. He cares for you, so He wants all of it.

If you pick a worry back up by morning, that is all right. Simply hand it to Him again.

Peace that the world cannot give

On the night before the cross, Jesus spoke these words to His disciples: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27).

The world tends to offer peace only when everything turns out the way we hoped. The peace of Jesus is different. It is His own peace, given as a gift, and it can hold your heart steady even while your questions remain unanswered. Isaiah 26:3 says, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” A mind stayed on Him is not a mind that never wonders. It is a mind that keeps returning to rest on Him.

Gentle practices for anxious nights

Keep one verse by your bed. Psalm 56:3 is easy to remember: “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” When worry rises, whisper it.

Name your worries to Him. Instead of letting fears circle, tell the Lord each one plainly, then say, “I give this to You.”

Write it down and leave it. A few lines can help you set your thoughts down for the night.

Thank Him for one thing. It can turn your heart toward His faithfulness.

Reach out in the daylight. If worry is weighing on you night after night, share it with a trusted friend, your pastor, or a counselor. Letting others help carry it is a good and wise thing.

A companion for your quiet moments

I wrote Praying for a Baby for women walking through this waiting season. It is a 40-day devotional with Scripture, prayers, and hope for the waiting season. You can keep it close and read one day at a time, letting God’s Word and a written prayer guide your heart when your own thoughts feel too heavy.

Find Praying for a Baby on Amazon

Rest in His care tonight

David wrote, “I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me” (Psalm 3:5). The same Lord who sustained him is sustaining you. You do not have to solve tomorrow tonight. You can lay down your questions, rest in His care, and trust Him to hold what you cannot.

A prayer for you

Lord, You know every thought that keeps me awake. You see my fears, my questions, and the longing of my heart. Tonight I cast my cares on You, because You care for me. Give me Your peace, the peace the world cannot give. Keep my mind stayed on You, and let Your comforts delight my soul. Help me rest in Your love, and sustain me through this wait.
